Rob Reiner: Life and career of a Hollywood icon

Updated:

Rob Reiner was an early baby boomer – born March 6, 1947 – and grew up immersed in the entertainment world as the eldest son of comedy legend Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner.

He began his career in television, gaining national fame in the 1970s as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards and cemented his place in pop culture.

Reiner’s transition behind the camera in the 1980s marked the beginning of an extraordinary directing career. His directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap (1984), became a cult classic and helped popularize the mockumentary format.

Over the next two decades, he directed films across genres, including Stand by Me (1986), the fairy-tale adventure The Princess Bride (1987), the rom-com staple When Harry Met Sally… (1989), the psychological thriller Misery (1990), and the courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992).

Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a production company behind hits like Seinfeld and The Shawshank Redemption, helping shape television and film in the late 20th century. His films have endured as beloved classics, many preserved in the National Film Registry and celebrated for their emotional depth, sharp humor, and universal appeal.

Beyond art, Reiner was a passionate political activist, advocating for early childhood education, health care reform, and marriage equality—often leveraging his public platform to champion social causes.
