Gold and other precious metal IRAs are an investment and carry risk. Consumers should be alert to claims that customers can make a lot of money in these or any investment with little risk. As with any investment, you can lose money, and past performance is not a guarantee of future performance results. Consumers should also obtain a clear understanding of the fees associated with any investment before agreeing to invest.

How to Open an American Hartford Gold IRA

American Hartford offers a same-day IRA setup, among the fastest in the industry. To open a gold IRA, customers can submit the online form or call the company directly. A product specialist assists with completing the paperwork to open a self-directed IRA.

The next step is to initiate a gold IRA rollover or transfer funds into the new account. Customers can transfer various retirement accounts, such as traditional and Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s, into an American Hartford Gold Precious Metals IRA.

After funding the account, customers can work with an account executive to select IRS-approved precious metals. Eligible metals include gold and silver.

After age 59 1/2, account holders may liquidate their IRA by withdrawing funds or taking physical possession of the metals. American Hartford Gold recommends holding precious metals for at least five to ten years maximum returns.

American Hartford Gold Costs

American Hartford Gold does not charge fees to set up a gold IRA or to roll over an existing retirement account into a precious metals IRA.

The website includes a product catalog, but prices are not listed. Customers must contact a representative for current pricing.

The minimum investment for an IRA is $10,000, while cash purchases require at least $5,000.

Although occasional promotions are offered, none were available at the time of writing. Annual fees are not publicly listed, so customers must contact a representative for details.

American Hartford Gold Storage Options

Since gold IRAs contain physical metals, the IRS requires investors to store bars, coins, or bullion in an IRS-approved depository. American Hartford Gold representatives often recommend Brinks Global Services, International Depository Services (IDS), or Delaware Depository Service Company, all of which have locations nationwide. Investors may choose to keep their precious metals segregated from others at the depository.

American Hartford Gold BuyBack Commitment

Unlike some competitors, American Hartford Gold offers a buyback program. This program allows customers to sell their precious metals without incurring additional liquidation fees. The company arranges shipment before issuing payment.

Customers should confirm eligibility for the “BuyBack Commitment” with their account executive. Eligible customers benefit from added convenience and savings on fees.\

Our Experience With American Hartford Gold

Overall, our experience with American Hartford Gold was very positive. Although we had to provide our name, email, and phone number to access the live chat or request a starter kit, company representatives responded quickly and answered our questions thoroughly.

We especially appreciated the “investor library,” which is available online and includes four eBooks with updated information for the current year. The resources include tips for preparing for a recession and a guide to opening a gold IRA–all designed to help first-time and experienced investors make informed decisions.

Going forward, we would like American Hartford Gold to be more transparent about its gold IRA fees. The company posts real-time metal prices on its website, something not all competitors provide.

While the pricing information helped us gauge our investment potential, budgeting for additional upfront fees was difficult without speaking directly to a representative.

I decided that it was time now for me to expand my investments to include metals due to to my perception of growing economic instability. My research pointed me to American Hartford for their ratings, track record, and success over time. Upon inquiry, I began working with Lauran, Patrick, and Dani who formed a team to ascertained my needs and goals. I had done my homework, but the team was able to expand my understanding and add nuances that we very helpful. I appreciated the responsiveness and professional manner of everyone I interacted with, while never feeling pressured. To me the feeling was more about being served that being sold. My initial experience has been efficient, effective, and reassuring that I have chosen wisely. I look forward to achieving my goal of a safeguarded financial future.

I would leave zero stars if I could. The whole experience felt like high pressure tactics to get you to purchase overpriced coins. I went into this looking for regular gold and silver coins. They pushed overpriced coins whose value is subjective. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

They are kind and helpful and there was no pressure in the purchase. After a week they are still sending me messages asking me if I am happy with the deal. Once I can get some more money I will add some more money to my gold.

When I called American Hartford Gold, I was considering acquiring some precious metal to diversify my portfolio. Knowing nothing about the precious metal market, I was a bit overwhelmed at the beginning. Difficult to catch up with all the info, given at a fast pace. But the person who worked with me did his best to help me understand. The "spread", however, is something that I really understood when I saw the price of 1 oz. of gold in the long term investment choice, as opposed to the short term bullion choice. It was quoted per 1/4 oz on paper, and I gasped when I figured the price of 1 oz! But, on the whole, I am satisfied to have gone through with this transaction. Please, do not try to sell me more gold/silver. I have no more money to invest!

I think there was a bait and switch to get me to buy gold from them. I responded to Michelle’s email stating “buy a gold coin and get a silver coin free”. Well, I bought a number of gold coins but didn’t get any silver coins. The salesman said if I had told him I was interested in the buy one get one, I should have told him up front. The gold coins I bought would have cost $200 more per coin to get the free silver coin(s). That doesn’t sound like a free coin to me. Buyer beware!

Staff were very polite and professional, helpful. I have one complaint. The true reality of the "spread" was not clear upfront to someone so uninitiated such as my wife and me. It only became evident at the very end when we were being read all the detailed information and, frankly, disclaimers, by the staff assistant. It then was revealed that the "spread" represents a very large percentage of the overall purchase, and won't likely be made back for another "7 or 8 months," according to Matt Ritter (we asked to go back and talk to him about this). Yes, you were careful to establish that we were intending this to be a "long-term" investment, and that you "recommend a 3-5 year" turnaround, but the actual spread, and what it means, was not made clear.

You even told us that you don't charge fees, giving the impression that you made your profit on the margins, but not on such a huge "spread." I know I am not well-informed, but we had made the decision to diversify our retirement funds into some precious metals, and that most likely after 5 years there will be a significant appreciation, but we were left feeling a bit baited. My wife was actually on the verge of pushing for us to pull out of the deal, but I reminded her of our long-term objectives.
