In the U.S., 41% of adults ages 65 and older are unpartnered, compared with 29% of adults ages 40 to 54. Many older adults use online dating. Around 19% of dating app users are ages 50 to 64, and 9% are 65 or older.
Current online dating demographics show users are more likely to be men than women, 56% compared with 39%. About 40% of seniors report being sexually active, and most say sex remains important in a romantic relationship or with a loved one in a long-term partnership.

Dating Among Seniors in the U.S.
Among older Americans, 31% of adults ages 50 to 64 have used a dating site or app, compared with 14% of adults age 65 and older. Only 5% of adults aged 50 to 64 and 2% of those 65+ currently use online dating for senior dating. Most older people report that they have never used a dating site or app.
Do Online Relationships Work for Older Adults?
Most U.S. adults, 61%, say relationships that begin on dating sites or apps with potential partners are just as successful as those that start in person. About 34% say they are less successful, and 4% say they are more successful. Even among older single adults who have never used online dating, 57% still believe online relationships are just as successful.
What Kind of Relationships Are Older Adults Looking For?
About 41% of online daters look only for a serious relationship, while 20% want only casual dating. Women are more likely than men to seek only a serious relationship, 46% compared with 36%.
Most Popular Senior Dating Apps and Sites
For adults ages 50 to 64, Plenty of Fish and Match rank highest, with 39% reporting use of each. Among adults aged 65 and older, Match leads at 60%, followed by eHarmony at 36%, making them some of the most used dating websites for seniors. Tinder and Bumble are more common among younger adults than seniors.
Negative Experiences and Online Dating Risks for Seniors
Most U.S. adults say meeting someone in person for a first date after using a dating site or app is safe. About 61% say it is very or somewhat safe, while 39% say it is not too or not at all safe. Women express more concern than men, with 48% saying it is not safe compared with 30% of men. These safety differences are important things to know about senior dating.
Views also differ by experience. Among adults who currently use online dating, 82% say meeting in person is safe. That drops to 55% among those who have never used a dating site or app, many of whom report concerns about senior dating scams and fraud.
Senior Sexuality and Intimacy Statistics
About 40% of adults ages 65 to 80 say they are sexually active. Gender differences extend to sexual activity, with 51% of older men saying they are sexually active compared with 31% of older women. Most seniors, 76%, say sex is important in a romantic relationship in later life.
Sexual activity is lower than among millennials, where more than half report having sex at least once a month. Even so, a significant share of single seniors remain active and report satisfaction with their sex life.
LGBT Older Adults and Dating Trends
About 7.6% of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ+, according to Gallup. Identification rates are lower among older generations. About 2.3% of baby boomers and 1.1% of the Silent Generation identify as LGBTQ+.
Research shows LGBTQ+ seniors are twice as likely to live by themselves and half as likely to have children. About 48% also report feeling socially isolated, which can affect overall well-being and mental health.
Bottom Line
Senior online dating brings mixed experiences. Among adults who have used a dating site or app, 41% describe the experience as positive, 32% as negative, and 27% as neither positive nor negative.
About 90% of singles consider sexual chemistry important, and 72% identify it within the first three dates. Kindness, shared values, and physical attraction remain key priorities when they build a senior dating profile and evaluate potential matches.
At the same time, many older adults bring complex life histories into dating. Nearly half of Gen X adults have been divorced, and more than half report feeling behind in relationship goals. Dating burnout is common, with many taking breaks before returning with clearer expectations.
